A Xenia school board member wants another look at the curriculum to make sure a controversial topic isn’t being taught anywhere in the district.
Jeremy Cox requested that critical race theory (CRT) be placed on the agenda for the Monday, Oct. 14 meeting, during which he is asking the board to consider a proposal for an additional curriculum audit.
Critical race theory is an academic concept that is more than 40 years old. The core idea is that race is a social construct, and that racism is not merely the product of individual bias or prejudice, but also something embedded in legal systems and policies.
An audit was recently completed by Curriculum Management Solutions, but in an email to the Gazette, Cox cited the audit itself, which suggested a new one should be performed.
“I question how anyone can say a thing is or is not being taught when the CMSI auditors essentially concluded that the school district does not have curriculum management practices,” Cox said in the email.
