Students at one California public high school had to pretend to come out as gay or lesbian for a class assignment last month.
“Stand in a circle. Each of you is now gay or lesbian, and you are about to begin your coming out process. You cannot talk for the rest of this activity,” the Rancho Buena Vista High School freshmen were instructed in the elective seminar taught by a math teacher.
The assignment prompted negative backlash from both students and parents.
James Leon told NBC San Diego that his daughter took a picture of the instructions and was one of several students to walk out of class.
“Very uncomfortable,” Leon told the news station of his daughter’s reaction. “She told me right away when she got home. She said, ‘Dad, you have to hear this.’ She wanted to show me what was going on because she knows I am not for teaching any of that stuff in school.”
