The Rutherford County Tennessee school board passed a resolution 5-1 last month urging Tennessee officials to “expedite the closure of the nation’s borders,” WKRN reports.
The resolution comes as the county, which is located near Nashville, has seen a 140% increase in its English Second Learner (ESL) population in the past decade.
Two years ago, RCS schools had 6,214 ESL students; it now has 8,373, an increase of nearly 35%. This means 16% of the district’s 51,000 students are English language learners, or about 1 in every 6 students.
